A training program on postharvest handling and value addition of pear fruits was organised by Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre, P.A.U. Ludhiana in collaboration with KVK, Booh, Tarn Taran. Dr BVC Mahajan Director informed that pear is an important fruit of Punjab growing commercially in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts. The Punjab Government has established Pear Estate in Amritsar district to boost the production of pear fruits and its marketing in domestic and distant markets of India. The harvesting period of pear July to September coincides with monsoon rains leading to glut in the market and huge postharvest losses. Dr Mahajan elaborated that this fruit has good storage potential and can be stored for 6-8 weeks in cold storage. These stored fruits can be marketed to other states during off-season. Secondly, processing could be another way to diversify its use and earn profit from its processed products. Dr. Swati Kapoor, Food Technologist provided hands-on-training to the farmers for preparation of pear jam, pear bar, pear juice and pear squash. As such processed pear products are not available in the market, therefore, progressive farmers of this region wanted to explore storage and processing potential of pear crop. These technologies could help minimizing the postharvest losses of this premium fruit and popularize use of pear fruit in its processed form in the local and inter-state market.
