Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology
Centre (PHPTC) was established in October 1998, on the Punjab Agricultural
University (PAU) Campus, Ludhiana. It came into existence with collaborative
efforts of Punjab Government, PAU, USAID-ACE Project and University of
California Davis. The core scientific staff for the centre has been provided by
PAU along with a building to house the centre. The Punjab Government through its
executive agency, the Punjab Rural Development Board, has provided funds for
purchase of equipments and the Punjab Mandi Board is committed to provide annual
grants for recurring expenses. The Ministry of Food Processing Industry and
National Horticulture Board, Govt. of India, has partially funded the
establishment of state-of-the-art Quality Control Laboratory and Postharvest
Laboratory of the Centre.
Mandate
- To conduct training courses
on postharvest handling for farmers, marketers etc.
- To conduct applied need
based research and develop appropriate postharvest technologies.
- To assist the domestic
horticultural industry to achieve international standards and to set a
benchmark for quality produce in India.
- To build and strengthen
linkages between postharvest professionals and horticultural sector in
India.
- To provide information on
specifications and standards for domestic and export marketing of food.
- To provide reference room
facilities for postharvest information.
- To provide laboratory
services for trade and industry (pesticides residues, heavy metals and other
quality parameters).
- To help assess postharvest
losses and project appraisals.
