Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre will organize 12 training
programmes each of one day duration for farmers of Punjab from September 2019 to
December 2019 with financial assistance from Directorate of Horticulture,
Government of Punjab. These training programmes will be organized in
collaboration with Skill Development Centre, PAU Ludhiana. During these training
programmes lectures on various aspects such as harvesting methods, precooling,
packaging, storage, dehydration technology, safe use of pesticides and protected
cultivation for fruits and vegetables will be delivered. In addition, farmers
will also be made sensitized about the various Government schemes to avail
financial assistance to strengthen themselves. Dr BVC Mahajan, Director of this
Centre highlighted that fruits and vegetables are highly perishable commodities
and sometimes more than half of the total produce is lost due to lack of
awareness about postharvest handling practices and non-availability of adequate
postharvest infrastructure.
The scientists of the Centre will impart hands on training to educate the
farmers and marketers for careful handling and value addition of horticultural
produce. Dr Ritu Tandon, Dr Swati, Dr Pooja and Dr. Varsha will conduct these
training programmes.
