Training programme for Horticulture Development Officers

Punjab Horticultural Postharvest technology Centre, Punjab Agricultural University Campus, Ludhiana organized a training programme on postharvest management of fruits and vegetables for Horticulture Development Officers of Punjab. About 25 officers from different districts attended the training programme. The trainees were given exposure of latest techniques regarding harvesting, precooling, grading, packaging, storage and marketing of horticultural produce. Dr BVC Mahajan, Director of this Centre told that horticultural crops typically have a high moisture content, tender texture and therefore deteriorate rapidly. Losses during post-harvest operations are enormous and matter of great concern. The importance and technical guidelines for the establishment of cold chain for export of perishable commodities were discussed. Dr. Ritu Tandon stressed upon the judicious use of pesticides on horticultural crops owing to the harmful effects of pesticide residues. The participants were made aware of Food Safety Act, its guidelines and its ultimate importance for human health. This Centre also arranged a video conferencing talk with Dr Gureet Brar Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Science of California State University, USA on safe handling of pesticides and their usage precautions on horticultural crops. Dr Swati Kapoor gave tips for processing of horticultural crops for upgradation of small scale farmers.
